TEC, ยง28.029(b), requires all school districts and open-enrollment charter schools to automatically enroll in an advanced mathematics course for each Grade 6 student who performed in the top 40% on the Grade 5 mathematics assessment or on a local measure that includes the student's Grade 5 class ranking or a demonstrated proficiency Grade 5 mathematics coursework. Therefore, Kaufman ISD will automatically enroll any incoming 6th grade into honors 6th-grade math if their 5th-grade math STAAR score falls within the top 40% of scores. If a student did not take the 5th grade Math STAAR, the district will consider their 5th grade Math MAP score. If that score is unavailable, the student will be asked to take a released 5th grade Math STAAR Test to assess their results in order to determine their placement. Parents and guardians have the option to opt their child out of the advanced 6th-grade mathematics program if their child is automatically enrolled due to this requirement and should speak with the school to handle this.
